“Dark Matters”
The club has suffered some significant losses this month.  One a death – David Glackin, as reported by email earlier (it was a very upbeat memorial service).  And 6 we’ve lost to the RIF last week.  Including our current secretary, David Wright, and treasurer, Jim Edwards.  Also former treasurer, Vic Christensen and an officer from the previous club incarnation, Dan Peplinski.  They will truly be missed, not only for their service that has made this club what it is, but for their expertise with observational equipment, and their fellowship.  We will hopefully still see some at star parties.  And we wish them well.  Vic continues to send me his astronomy news emails, which I’ll try to continue forwarding to members.

Help Wanted
This means that per the constitution the president (myself) needs to appoint a treasurer & secretary to fill those vacancies until our regular election in November-December.  Most urgent is the treasurer position.  Volunteers are most welcome.  Are there any civic-minded volunteers out there who can keep us going at least the rest of the year?  If none, we may approach you.  The former officers kept excellent records (also posted to our Aerolink folder), and are available locally for questions.

Messier Marathon Report by David Wright
March 24th Saturday was Messier Marathon night at the LAAS Lockwood Valley site. The weather was great until midnight. Scott said it was one of the darkest nights he's seen up there. Around midnight the clouds rolled in over the course of about 20 minutes, so we packed up. There were three guys from LAAS observing.

I got a late start with putting Gabriel to bed and fiddling with the imager and stuff. I didn't end up taking any images but did start into the Messier objects by around 10. I got about 20 before the clouds came in.

I didn't have the Messier list since Mark wasn't there with the book we got [Mark & Paul chickened out at the last minute due to weather forecasts], but I used the Messier Marathon tour on the LX200, which seemed to start in the West for whatever was up.

We did bring a surprise that we wanted to show you guys, Gabriel and I made a Bahtinov focusing mask for the LX200 out of black mat board paper, and it works great! It's in the case with the telescope. It has a circular cutout in the center so that it rests on the secondary mirror and around the edge of the corrector plate mounting rim (not on the glass), and the Bob's Knobs stick out through the hole. Anyway, you'll just have to wait until next time to see how it works..

We’re still deciding on an astronomical video camera – inputs are invited.  They’d basically triple or quadruple our effective aperture for real-time imaging (e.g., group viewing), image capture & live video internet streaming (for armchair observers).  Finalists include the downscale (~$500-700) Orion StarShoot, Mallincam Jr. & GSTAR-EX2; the more upscale (~$900-1200) StellaCam 3 basic & Mallincam Hyper; or the top scale ($1500+) StellaCam 3 Peltier cooled & Mallincam VSS or Extreme.  For anyone interested, I can send my few pages of research & links.

Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1300

Explanation: Big, beautiful, barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300 lies some 70 million light-years away on the banks of the constellation Eridanus. This Hubble Space Telescope composite view of the gorgeous island universe is one of the largest Hubble images ever made of a complete galaxy. NGC 1300 spans over 100,000 light-years and the Hubble image reveals striking details of the galaxy's dominant central bar and majestic spiral arms. In fact, on close inspection the nucleus of this classic barred spiral itself shows a remarkable region of spiral structure about 3,000 light-years across. Unlike other spiral galaxies, including our own Milky Way, NGC 1300 is not presently known to have a massive central black hole.

Solar Flare in the Gamma-ray Sky

Explanation: What shines in the gamma-ray sky? The answer is usually the most exotic and energetic of astrophysical environments, like active galaxies powered by supermassive black holes, or incredibly dense pulsars, the spinning remnants of exploded stars. But on March 7, a powerful solar flare, one of a series of recent solar eruptions, dominated the gamma-ray sky at energies up to 1 billion times the energy of visible light photons. These two panels illustrate the intensity of that solar flare in all-sky images recorded by the orbiting Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. On March 6, as on most days, the Sun was almost invisible to Fermi's imaging detectors. But during the energetic X-class flare, it became nearly 100 times brighter than even the Vela Pulsar at gamma-ray energies. Now faded in Fermi's view, the Sun will likely shine again in the gamma-ray sky as the solar activity cycle approaches its maximum.

South Pole Telescope provides new insights into dark energy and neutrinos

“Analysis of data from the 10-meter South Pole Telescope is providing new support for the most widely accepted explanation of dark energy -- the source of the mysterious force that is responsible for the accelerating expansion of the universe. The results also are beginning to hone in on the masses of neutrinos, the most abundant particles in the universe, which until recently were thought to be without mass.


“The data strongly support the leading model for dark energy, Albert Einstein's cosmological constant -- a slight modification to his theory of general relativity -- even though the analysis was based on only a fraction of the SPT data collected and only 100 of the more than 500 galaxy clusters detected so far.


"With the full SPT data set, we will be able to place extremely tight constraints on dark energy and possibly determine the mass of the neutrinos," said Bradford Benson, a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Chicago's Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. Benson presented the SPT collaboration's latest findings on April 1 at the American Physical Society meeting in Atlanta.


“A series of papers led by Christian Reichardt detailing the SPT findings have been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal.


“The results are based on a new method that combines measurements taken by the SPT and X-ray satellites, and extends these measurements to larger distances than previously achieved using galaxy clusters.
“The most widely accepted property of dark energy is that it leads to a pervasive force acting everywhere and at all times in the universe. This force could be the manifestation of Einstein's cosmological constant, which effectively assigns energy to empty space, even when it is free of matter and radiation. Einstein introduced the cosmological constant into his theory of general relativity to accommodate a stationary universe, the dominant idea of his day. He later considered it to be his greatest blunder after the discovery of an expanding universe.
“In the late 1990s, astronomers discovered that the expansion of the universe appeared to be accelerating, according to cosmic distance measurements based on the brightness of exploding stars. Gravity should have been slowing the expansion, but instead it was speeding up.


“Einstein's cosmological constant is one explanation of the observed acceleration of the expanding universe, now supported by countless astronomical observations. Others hypothesize that gravity could operate differently on the largest scales of the universe. In either case, the astronomical measurements are pointing to new physics that have yet to be understood......[more at the above link]

Clocking an accelerating universe: First results from BOSS

“Some six billion light years ago, almost halfway from now back to the big bang, the universe was undergoing an elemental change. Held back until then by the mutual gravitational attraction of all the matter it contained, the universe had been expanding ever more slowly. Then, as matter spread out and its density decreased, dark energy took over and expansion began to accelerate. Today BOSS, the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, the largest component of the third Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III), announced the most accurate measurement yet of the distance scale of the universe during the era when dark energy turned on.


......“What if dark energy isn't an unknown force or substance, but instead a shortcoming of Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, our best-yet theory of gravity? General Relativity predicts how fast galaxies should be moving toward one another in galaxy clusters, and, in the aggregate, how fast the structure of the universe should be growing. Any departure from its predictions would mean the theory is flawed......
“Baryon acoustic oscillation measures the angle across the sky of structures of known size, the peaks where galaxies cluster most densely in the network of filaments and voids that fill the universe. Since these density peaks recur regularly, the angle between appropriate pairs of galaxies as precisely measured from Earth reveals their distance -- the narrower the apparent angle, the farther away they are.


“Knowing the distance to an object tells its age as well, since its light travels from there to here at known speed. And the redshift of the light reveals how the universe has expanded since that time, as expansion stretches space itself; the wavelength of light traveling through space toward Earth stretches proportionally, becoming redder and revealing the expansion of the universe since the light left its source.......
"We depend on redshift to know expansion rates and how structure was growing at different times in the past," says Beth Reid, a Hubble Fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory who directed the BOSS study of redshift space distortions. "But redshifts aren't uniform. Galaxies are carried along in the Hubble flow as the universe expands, but they also have their own velocities. They tend to fall toward denser regions, for example. Because the ones on the far side of a dense region are coming toward us, their redshift makes them look closer than they really are; the opposite is true for the galaxies on the near side, which are falling away from us -- they look farther away."


“Statistical analysis of the redshifts of the hundreds of thousands of galaxies in the BOSS dataset can take into account the peculiarities of local variation and still produce a dependable measure of distance, the Hubble expansion rate, and the growth rate of structure in the universe. With these techniques, Reid and her colleagues have measured gravity on a scale of 100 million light years, far larger than the most accurate gravity measure yet, which is based on the distance from Earth to the moon. Their conclusion: Einstein was right.

April 12 & 13 -- The von Kármán Lecture Series: 2012 -- Gale Crater: Exploring the Mars Science Laboratory Landing Site

The selection of Gale crater as the Mars Science Laboratory landing site took over 5 years, involved broad participation of the science community via five open workshops, and narrowed an initial >50 sites (25 by 20 km) to four finalists (Eberswalde, Gale, Holden and Mawrth) based on science and safety. Science criteria important for the selection include the ability to assess past habitable environments, which include diversity, context, and biosignature (including organics) preservation. All of the final four sites have layered sedimentary rocks with spectral evidence for phyllosilicates that clearly address the science objectives of the mission. Engineering constraints important to the selection included: latitude (±30°), elevation (<-1 km), relief at baselines of 1 km, slopes at baselines of 2-5 m, rock abundance, and a radar-reflective, load-bearing, and trafficable surface that is safe for landing and roving. Sites were evaluated in detail using targeted data from instruments on all active orbiters, and especially Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Sophisticated entry, descent and landing simulations that include detailed information on all of the engineering constraints indicate all of the final four sites are safe for landing. Evaluation of the traversability of the landing sites and target “go to” areas outside of the ellipse using slope and material properties information indicates that all are trafficable and “go to” sites can be accessed within the lifetime of the mission. In the final selection, Gale crater was favored over Eberswalde based on its greater diversity and potential habitability.

March 24th Saturday is Messier Marathon night at the LAAS Lockwood Valley site. This is a long-standing amateur astronomy event, where observers try and view all 110 Messier objects in one night (average 5 minutes per object in 9 hrs). It is possible only around the New Moon in March.

The Yosemite star party (w. Leslie Wickman & her class Feb. 19) was great success -- after clear nights on Thursday and Friday (with no observing, too tired!), we were clouded out on Saturday for the star party, but it cleared up on Sunday afternoon and we rescheduled it for Sunday night. The only problem we had was mistaking Mars for Saturn. :)

School Star Party Report from David WrightOn Tuesday, February 28, 2012, I took the day off to host a daytime astronomy activity at Buttercup Preschool / Yerba Buena Elementary. It was originally scheduled for Monday, but we were clouded out and had to reschedule.

I brought along the club's Solar telescope and the LX200, as well as my own 100mm dobsonian and 20x80 binoculars. The sky was clear in the morning but we did have to dodge and wait out some clouds in the early afternoon.





I was able to do a successful daytime alignment of the LX200, with which we then observed the 6 day old waxing crescent Moon and the clearly gibbous Venus. The Moon was barely visible and Jupiter wasn't bright enough to find at all.

The sun had several prominences, including a loop, as well as visible surface texture and at least one faint sunspot. We tried various eyepieces on the solar telescope to vary the magnification; our Meade 12.4 and 15mm eyepieces gave a much better view than the supplied 25mm, and our Meade 26mm seemed to have better eye relief.

With the binoculars we observed the Moon, as well as the hillside when clouds were blocking other targets.

About 30-40 kids got to participate (all preschool and kindergarten age), and all were pretty excited an impressed. One of the classes came out later to present me with a thank you sign they had made.

Better advance coordination with school leadership would have helped, because more classes could have participated if it had been more "official".

Explanation: The constellation of Orion holds much more than three stars in a row. A deep exposure shows everything from dark nebula to star clusters, all embedded in an extended patch of gaseous wisps in the greater Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. The brightest three stars on the far left are indeed the famous three stars that make up the belt of Orion. Just below Alnitak, the lowest of the three belt stars, is the Flame Nebula, glowing with excited hydrogen gas and immersed in filaments of dark brown dust. Below the frame center and just to the right of Alnitak lies the Horsehead Nebula, a dark indentation of dense dust that has perhaps the most recognized nebular shapes on the sky. On the upper right lies M42, the Orion Nebula, an energetic caldron of tumultuous gas, visible to the unaided eye, that is giving birth to a new open cluster of stars. Immediately to the left of M42 is a prominent bluish reflection nebula sometimes called the Running Man that houses many bright blue stars. The above image, a digitally stitched composite taken over several nights, covers an area with objects that are roughly 1,500 light years away and spans about 75 light years.

Explanation: The first identified compact galaxy group, Stephan's Quintet is featured in this eye-catching image constructed with data drawn from the extensive Hubble Legacy Archive. About 300 million light-years away, only four of these five galaxies are actually locked in a cosmic dance of repeated close encounters. The odd man out is easy to spot, though. The interacting galaxies, NGC 7319, 7318A, 7318B, and 7317 have an overall yellowish cast. They also tend to have distorted loops and tails, grown under the influence of disruptive gravitational tides. But the predominantly bluish galaxy, NGC 7320, is closer, just 40 million light-years distant, and isn't part of the interacting group. Stephan's Quintet lies within the boundaries of the high flying constellation Pegasus. At the estimated distance of the quartet of interacting galaxies, this field of view spans about 500,000 light-years. However, moving just beyond this field, above and to the left, astronomers can identify another galaxy, NGC 7320C, that is also 300 million light-years distant. Of course, including it would bring the interacting quartet back up to quintet status.

This composite image shows the distribution of dark matter, galaxies, and hot gas in the core of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 520, formed from a violent collision of massive galaxy clusters. The natural-color image of the galaxies was taken with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii. Superimposed on the image are "false-colored" maps showing the concentration of starlight, hot gas, and dark matter in the cluster. Starlight from galaxies, derived from observations by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, is colored orange. The green-tinted regions show hot gas, as detected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. The gas is evidence that a collision took place. The blue-colored areas pinpoint the location of most of the mass in the cluster, which is dominated by dark matter. Dark matter is an invisible substance that makes up most of the universe's mass. The dark-matter map was derived from the Hubble Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations, by detecting how light from distant objects is distorted by the cluster galaxies, an effect called gravitational lensing. The blend of blue and green in the center of the image reveals that a clump of dark matter resides near most of the hot gas, where very few galaxies are found. This finding confirms previous observations of a dark-matter core in the cluster. The result could present a challenge to basic theories of dark matter, which predict that galaxies should be anchored to dark matter, even during the shock of a collision. Abell 520 resides 2.4 billion light-years away.

Mar. 15 & 16 -- The von Kármán Lecture Series: 2012 -- Mysterious TitanTitan, Saturn's largest moon and the only moon in the solar system enshrouded in a thick atmosphere, has fascinated observers since its discovery in 1655. We'll begin with the discovery of Titan by Christiaan Huygens and quickly cover all the major scientific discoveries about this intriguing moon right up to the amazing results that are flowing back now from the Cassini-Huygens Mission. The Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn, a joint NASA-ESA-ASI mission, was launched in 1997 and reached Saturn in July of 2004. The Huygens probe, released from the Cassini orbiter on Christmas day of that same year, drifted down to the surface of Titan on January 14th of 2005, returning spectacular images and data to a world-wide audience. The Cassini orbiter has gone on to complete almost 80 close flybys of Titan and has revealed the surface, which is normally hidden by a thick nitrogen-rich atmosphere filled with aerosols, to be a complex, exciting, and remarkably earth-like place. There are miles and miles of dunes, lakes of methane and ethane, and exotic features that might possibly be ice volcanoes. The atmosphere itself is more dense than Earth's and is a soup of complex hydrocarbons. Humanity has been fascinated by the solar system’s second largest moon for hundreds of years; and we're sitting at a ring-side seat as Titan reveals its mysteries to us.

Jan. 19 Pizza Party & LX-200 Tutorial.
The pizza proved popular, with about 20 in attendance. And David Wright’s LX-200 tutorial was likewise very popular. Thanks again to him for the handouts he prepared, and helping us feel more comfortable using this impressive telescope. Hopefully it’ll now get more use. We should be videorecording these presentations, and will make more of an effort to do so.
We covered 2 star parties in 2 consecutive nights!
Jan 28 – Griffith Park Star Party. 3 club officers (Mark, Paul & David) operated the LX-200 on the grounds of the Griffith Observatory during the monthly LAAS public star party there. It was a clear, warm, night and the public was out in force. We shared Jupiter, Venus, Mars, M42 (Orion Nebula), M31 (Andromeda Galaxy), Pleiades & the Moon with some long lines of excited observers, including Paul’s family & David’s son. The LX-200 performed beautifully. Here are some shots, courtesy of Paul. We also made a very useful contact with a senior member of the LAAS, who invited some of us to come as his guest to the LAAS dark sky observing site in Lockwood Valley for their monthly dark sky night. Maybe the Saturday nearest new moon in March? Paul has also now joined LAAS, so we have another inside man.







Meadows Elementary School Science Night (by Mark Barrera) I attended Meadows Elementary School Science Night on Friday January 27th, bringing the Aerospace Astronomy Club 8" Dobsonian telescope. Meadows Elementary is a K-5 school near Aerospace in Manhattan Beach. Meadows Science night was started last year by 5th grade science teacher Chris Miko, to get kids interested in exploring science, math, engineering, and in particular, space. Chris now teaches at the Da Vinci Science Academy (just down the street from Aerospace on Aviation Blvd.), but his legacy still continues at Meadows Elementary and he is still a major contributor to this event. This year, there were science exhibits from local companies such as Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and the Manhattan Beach Roundhouse Aquarium as well as fun science workshops on topics such as rocketry, robotics, and optical illusions.





This was my second year participating and the response was once again tremendous. The night was clear and warm, just perfect for viewing the planets. With help from my wife, Annie Barrera, and daughter Yasmeen Barrera (age 11), we helped Science Night attendees view the Moon, Jupiter, and Venus through the 8" Dob. For many people, this was their first time ever looking through a telescope. The telescope is big enough to catch lots of people's attention. The look of excitement on the faces of both children and parents was worth it all. We had many return visitors and were busy all evening from about 5:30 - 8:30 pm. In all, I would say we had about 120-150 people look through the telescope. Kids and adults had many questions. They were especially excited to see the Galilean moons of Jupiter which I asked people to count when they looked at Jupiter. Anyway, this was a great way to help spur more interest in science and engineering among the kids as well as raising awareness among adults. All in all, a great time was had by all!

First Light for the ATIK CCD Imager. From Jim Edwards (Treasurer/Resource Comm. Chmn.): “A quick and dirty image of the sun I took yesterday using the new ATIK imager and Coronado H-alpha solar telescope. The first image is "tuned" to show the surface features, the second is "tuned" to show those few prominances that were blooming [above the limb] at the time (bottom left, around 7:30). Turned out better than I was expecting, given the time constraint I was working with and the low sun angle.”“Hopefully these will get the juices flowing in some of the members to try this stuff out for themselves. I'm hoping to do night work in some two weeks from now.” [maybe shown at his February club presentation?]



Computer cable for LX-200. We got one of these to enable uploads of satellite/comet ephemerides etc., to the scope database, operation of the scope from a laptop planetarium program, etc.

Mystery Object Photo Contest

Here is a message & photos just received from an observer in Costa Rica -- sent to someone here at Aerospace. Can you identify the object using the info given (see especially the image on the right)? A good test of astronomical/astrodynamical prowess. We may give prize(s) or recognition at our next club mtg. (club officers may not be qualified if they saw my solution, unless they come up with a better one). We expect validation by then.

“....The object which look like a comet to me moved about a half of the sky in a about an hour and a half. I made me really nervous because I realized that for me to observe something at that speed it had to be close to Earth. Then when I got home late that night I went online to try to find out about possible asteroids passing close to Earth on that date but couldn’t find anything. When I look at the pictures I found also that in some of the photos that took of Venus and Neptune I was seeing a light blue bright spot, when I zoomed it in I started seeing semicircular object around this bit of blue light. What really looks interesting to me is that at first, as the photo shows, we only saw the object reflecting this blue bright light fro its very center and then as it apparently changed direction it revealed the tail we started seeing....”

Explanation: What's that in the sky? An aurora. A large
coronal mass ejection occurred on our Sun five days ago, throwing a cloud of fast moving electrons, protons, and ions toward the Earth. Although most of this cloud passed above the Earth, some of it impacted our Earth's magnetosphere and resulted in spectacular auroras being seen at high northern latitudes. Pictured above is a particularly photogenic auroral corona captured last night above Grotfjord, Norway. To some, this shimmering green glow of recombining atmospheric oxygen might appear as a large eagle, but feel free to share what it looks like to you. This round of solar activity is not yet over -- a new and even more powerful solar flare occurred yesterday that might provide more amazing aurora as soon as tonight.

Explanation: Believe it or not, this is the North Pole of Saturn. It is unclear how
an unusual hexagonal cloud system that surrounds Saturn's north pole was created, keeps its shape, or how long it will last. Originally discovered during the Voyager flybys of Saturn in the 1980s, nobody has ever seen anything like it elsewhere in the Solar System. Although its infrared glow was visible previously to the Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn, in 2009 the mysterious hexagonal vortex became fully illuminated by sunlight for the first time during the Cassini's visit. Since then, Cassini has imaged the rotating hexagon in visible light enough times to create a time-lapse movie. The pole center was not well imaged and has been excluded. This movie shows many unexpected cloud motions, such as waves emanating from the corners of the hexagon. Planetary scientists are sure to continue to study this most unusual cloud formation for quite some time.

Largest Solar Storm In Years Hitting Earth. The
AP (1/24, Borenstein) reports, "The sun is bombarding Earth with radiation from the biggest solar storm in more than six years with more to come from the fast-moving eruption." The flare took place on Sunday and over the next few days could "cause communication problems for polar-traveling airplanes, said space weather center physicist Doug Biesecker," although experts noted that other storms in the past have been worse. Meanwhile, "NASA's flight surgeons and solar experts examined the solar flare's expected effects and decided that the six astronauts on the International Space Station do not have to do anything to protect themselves from the radiation, spokesman Rob Navias said."



The Washington Post (1/24, Vastag) notes the storm "could disrupt GPS signals and the electrical grid Tuesday, especially at high latitudes, space weather experts warned Monday." Biesecker also "said any rocket launches scheduled for Monday probably would have to be scrubbed, although he said he was unaware of any." Michael Hesse of the NASA Space Weather Laboratory expects the peak of activity to come this morning, noting "it's not going to be a catastrophe." Hesse, who described how NASA notified satellite operators and Office of Science and Technology Policy, said, "We're going to be monitoring this."




According to the Los Angeles Times (1/24, Khan), while solar storms could potentially knock out satellites, "most satellites built today should be relatively safe from mid-level storms such as the current one, said NOAA research scientist Juan Rodriguez." Meanwhile, because the storms could affect planes' navigational systems, "this particular worry is expected to force rerouting of some flights during the storm."



FOX News (1/23) also focused on how planes will need to be rerouted to deal with the event in after "a rare warning from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency." Meanwhile, Space (1/24) reports on how several NASA satellites monitoring the sun captured the event which "spewed from sunspot 1402, a region of the sun that has become increasingly active lately."

Feb. 16 & 17 The von Kármán Lecture Series: 2012 -- Climate Sciences and the Climate Center of JPL
Understanding the far-reaching effects of climate change and how to adapt to these effects is one of the great challenges facing society today. Underpinning this challenge is the need to strengthen our understanding of the science and improve on our ability to project the future change, particularly at the regional scale. The factors that connect the buildup of CO2 to global warming require improvements in our understanding which come use of a variety of earth observations that are both available today and planned for tomorrow. JPL lies at the forefront of key areas of the climate sciences both in developing the critical global observations of Earth required to meet these significant challenges as well as in advancing our understanding of key climate processes on many different fronts. This talk will place many aspects of the research pursued at JPL in this larger context. The JPL-based Earth science highlighted will include:



• Basic research on understanding cryospheric changes, including the loss of ice from the world’s ice sheets and subsequent challenges in modeling this ice loss. • The monitoring of sea level rise and the challenges in understanding the factors that produce this rise and the projections of future rise. • The planetary energy balance, our understanding of it, how it is expected to change and where gaps exist in our understanding of the change. • The carbon cycle – how research at JPL is leading the community in a growing understanding of the carbon cycle and strategies to manage it.• The water cycle, its component parts including clouds, precipitation, water vapor and surface and subsurface water. New ways to fingerprint the processes that shape the water cycle and determine how it is changing will be emphasized.



One of the ways these important advances are being used is through an ongoing and focused effort to evaluate Earth system models in an attempt to place some level of ultimate confidence on their projections. An important activity led by JPL is the Earth system model evaluation effort carried out in partnership with PCMDI. Highlights of this effort, drawn from the research activities above, will be described.

Planets: Jupiter sets between 11 & 12pm. Mars rises between 6 & 8:30pm. Saturn rises between 10 & 11:30pm. Mercury sets between 5 & 7pm. Venus sets 3 hrs after sunset. Uranus sets 7:30-9:30pm.

Other Events:



10 Feb. Venus 0.3 deg N of Uranus; Zodiacal Light visible in N lat. After evening twilight for next 2 weeks.
